I am a last worder. You know, those people who always say something after the conversation is done? That's me. Sorry to say. I fight against it, and am better at not having the last word than when I was younger, but nevertheless, a last worder. Alex, when he was a teen was a last worder as well. Interesting time then. When we would have disagreements (ok, we'd fight), each of us would always try to get the last word:
"Oh, Alex, knock it off."
"Fine."
"That is enough."
"Okay, fine."
"I mean it, not one more word out of you!"
"FINE!"
On and on it would go, each one getting madder and madder, trying to triumph in the last word game. How stupid was that?
Hannah and I play this game now, but just for fun. We really don't think we always have to get the last word to be the "winner".
Do you ever notice the people who do telemarketing are last worders?
"No, thank you, thanks for calling."
"Can you tell me why you're saying no at this time?"
"I'm just saying no."
"But can you give me a reason?"

Ok...I have to get the "last word" and actually break this down for you...lol.
Telemarketers have scripting. With a "No, No, Close" style. Basically, they expect you to say "No", and are required to use two rebuttals to try and win you over based on your response. Believe me, there is nothing they haven't heard, planned for, and they only expect you to say "Yes" between 2% and 12% of the time depending on the product.
BUT, If you don't tell them "Why" you are turning them down, then they literally get stuck in their scripting. They are not allowed to make things up so they need to choose a direction to go. A good telemarketer won't lose a beat, but newer ones get stuck and keep asking you "why?" so they can continue on their computer screens.
Finally...even after you've said "No" enough times to get through their scripting...they are trained to read a closing statement. They are being monitored by their supervisors and receive immediate "coaching" if they don't attempt the rebuttals, or read the intro and close word by word. This is why you can't get a word in edgewise.
Every single call is recorded...so the agents rarely stray from the script for fear of the dreaded "coaching". This is why you should always complain if they say something wrong to you.
PS. (you are saving your sanity, your dinner time, and wasted marketing costs if you are always going to say no by registering your number every year as "Do Not Call")

It is a low wage, very difficult, highly stressful job, normally set up in smaller, poor, college towns where companies can live with 20% to 30% annual turnover. The people calling HATE their jobs, and hate bugging you...but have no alteratives if the local Wal-Mart is full. Actually...at least they get health care at the telemarketer.
So...for anyone reading this. The next time you get this call. Be nice...and understand they are not trying to take your hard earned money. They are just trying to keep the rent paid and the old car running at $8 to $11 an hour plus bennies.
