Into The Unknown

My sister and I were talking this weekend about her church. She thinks they are stepping into the open theism ring. She is a relatively new Christian, and if she smells a rat, one is probably there. I looked on the website of this church and read their statement of faith, and it looked ok, except for the fact that they didn't mention the sovereignity of God anywhere in there. Hmmmm. Not a good sign. So I stepped out of the comfort box and emailed one of the pastors (for some reason the Lead Pastor's email was not listed). Now I'm no theologian, but I understand open theism a bit. And I will pitch my tent in the "against" camp. I refuse to believe that God is not sovereign. That a God who knows how many hairs on someone's head, and knows all the stars in the heavens does not know what decisions I will make in my life. Or you in yours. He knew us before the beginning of time, before He breathed life into the dust that became Adam. No way does He not know everything that has happened, and what will happen. Here is an article I read that explained open theism from both sides: http://www.carm.org/open/intro.htm
I can't wait to get my email tomorrow.

YIKES! Tell your sister to run fast and far! Pray and pray and then pray some more. I am thinking you are talking about a church other than Boyd's. I love your simple faith in the sovereignty of God. Why can't everyone see that so easily?

I did get a response from the pastor, and he stated that they are not open theists.

makes you think, scary wonder who they think they're worshiping? cause it certainly isn't the God of the Bible.

I'm always concerned if the sovereignty of God isn't explicitly stated in the statement of faith. If you're not an open theist, why hide it? Why not be openly supportive of the simple concept of God's sovereignty?

Puzzling.

I agree, and that is one glaring discrepancy about their statement. She said the church is on probation. Maybe even double secret probation by now.

I know this doesn't pertain directly to the open theism but I read this just now and HAD to share...LOVE IT!

(Jonathan Edwards)

In all your path, walk with Christ as a little,
poor, helpless child--taking hold of His hand,
keeping your eye on the marks of the wounds
in His hands and side, whence came the blood
that cleanses you from sin, and hiding your
nakedness under the skirt of the white shining
robes of His righteousness.
