This night couldn't have turned out any better for our hero. Eli walked in to the room where they have the children try out all the mouthpieces--I'm not thinking about how many children tried it before him, not thinking, not thinking--and he nailed the clairnet the first time, nice clear sound, took a few tries on the flute, got a note out of that one and got the trombone on the first try. The only one he just couldn't seem to make go was the trumpet. That's ok. Dizzy Gillespe can keep his cheeks.
There are so many children at the school that want to play the saxophone, we had to go to another interview, where they let the child play the actual instrument. Hannah's favorite band director called Eli's name, and asked him if he was related to Hannah. Pretty happy to hear that it was the case. (how many Noser families in the state of Wisconsin ya think?) Had him blow the sax mouthpiece, nice sound, the director then asked Eli to put a little less mouth on the reed, and when he played the scale first try, said that's all he needed to hear. Keep in mind that most tryouts lasted 15 or 20 minutes. We were in and out in less than three. I may have jumped the gun, but I told Eli that according to the director's face when he played the sax, and his obvious happiness at having Hannah's little brother play the same instrument she does, I would be really surprised if he doesn't get it. He said even if he got the trombone, that would be ok. Pretty excited guy. Pretty happy older sis, too.
