Give 'Em Some Rope...

...and they'll hang themselves.

Recently we have been trying to give Eli some more freedom so he can learn more responsibility. Well. Instead he learned how to tie a noose. Yesterday he got booted from class at church for inappropriate behavior, and I took him home and instilled in him a love of writing. I think that's how it went anyway. He wrote for four hours. I hope he doesn't have this type of behavior again, because he will have fingers like his daddy and have to grow up to be a shop teacher. They'll call him "Stubby" ifyaknowwhatimean.

And the trouble is, you never know when you can trust them with a good length of that rope. You play it out inch by inch and they're doin' just fine, but as soon as they get enough to tangle up, BAM, you've got a mess on your hands.

A friend I haven't spent time with in many months was over last week and mentioned a list of child related topics she wanted to discuss some time. I had to meekly reply, "Sure, but just so you know that the behavior of my teenage children doesn't necessarily represent my point of view."

keithslady: LOL! Few quotes are good bumper sticker/T-shirt material in my book - but gotta love that one! :-)

Keithslady, That is a good quote. I will remember that one.

He wrote "I will have good behavior in church" five hundred times.

Good job, Kristi. I'm glad to see someone who isn't afraid to be a parent.

Hey..... that's the punishment I give Isaiah. Not so much the list of "I will/will not...." but he has to write. I make him write an apology letter to whomever he disobeyed (teacher/bus driver, etc). That's tough for a first grader who still has to sound out all the words. It works for a good long while too, until the rope gets too long anyway.

Instead of giving Eli the "evil eye" you could get out a notebook and pencil and wave it at him. That'd get his attention I bet.
