That's Polk County State Fair. Yep, that's what we call it. I know it is a podunky smalltown fair, but it is tradition, and we try our hardest to go every year. This year was no disappointment, as usual. Except for one small thing (pun).
I remember when I was young, we were allowed to "run" the fair. I know I never heard the "stranger" talk from my parents, there was just no fear there. We could spend hours and hours running from the midway to the tractor pull, to the barns, to the midway, well, you get the idea. This year we (Kelli, Kandi & I) were looking for Kori, and started walking with that in mind. We made it around the whole fair in about 3 minutes. Hey, where'd the rest of the fair go? It used to be so much bigger...
I know the acreage is not less, nor are there fewer exhibits, we are just bigger. So we turned around and sauntered. Looked at all the photographs, baked goods, sewing exhibits and what have you. Went to the midway and Kandi won a goldfish, and Kelli won a stuffed Nemo fish. Kristi won nofish. (there's Dr. Suess again) We did not go into the barns--c'mon with this heat? No way. But I did pet a pygmy goat and a tiny little potbelly pig in the petting zoo. The goat kept gnawing on my finger, and generally being my pal, so I stayed. Is it crazy for me who detested farming to want to move out of town and buy sommadem goats? Man, were they sweet.
We skipped the quilts cuz it was getting hot, and agreed that we had seen as much of the fair as we needed to.
So where will you find us on the last weekend of July or first weekend of August next year?
POLK COUNTY STATE FAIR!!!! WHEEHOOO!!

I am so happy for you and yours that you went and carried on your tradition! I am also happy that I stayed cool as a cuke indoors!
Anyone who wants to chip in for Kristi's Christmas present (a potbellied pig) - let me know.
If they'd stay small, I'd be all over it!
After the giant hole in your backyard, I don't think it's out of line for you to just...buy some goats for your backyard, too.
Just a thought.
