Parental Sayings

Carla's blog reminded me of something just now. Exactly what does "simmer down" mean? Where did this come from? How about "keep it down to a dull roar"? The first time my uncle said this to us I was stumped. Roar, isn't that loud? That just didn't make sense to me. Will your face really stay that way? No? Then why do parents say that? How about "hold your horses", what if you don't have horses? My grandpa always said, "shake a leg." So we did, and he didn't like that--we were just doing what we were told.
I once told my mom that my butt didn't have gears, so how could I get it in gear? Would that be a four or five speed? Overdrive?
Go peddle your papers, take a hike, go fly a kite. Really? May I?

SSEEEEE?? Just like I told ya! The English language is funny enough for a blog! Here's another one that's been rolling around in my brain - "Move it or lose it"...lose What, exactly? And isn't that the whole idea behind working out? To move it AND lose it? Well then, which is it? Man...I'd hate to have to learn this language as an adult!

One of my favorite stories is when my oldest was about 5 we were over at some friends for supper. My son was trying to talk and was having problems getting the words out. I gave him one of those sayings: "spit it out". He proceeded to spit out the food he had in his mouth.
